Gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts, is very common amongst men. As such, we see more and more males come to us seeking male breast reduction. With this procedure, Dr. Basile can help sculpt a more masculine chest to help give you confidence in your own skin.

About Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia or large male breasts can be caused by a few factors: genetics, excess levels of estrogen, hormone changes, medications, harmful drugs, alcohol or can even be caused by various health conditions. In some cases, the enlarged breast consists of excess fatty tissues or can be sagging skin. Since there are varying cases of gynecomastia, there are a few ways that a male breast reduction procedure can be performed. Both can be used separately or in tandem to help our patients reach their aesthetic goals.

Am I a good candidate?

If you are physically healthy and have tried to lose the excess fat without success, you may be a good candidate for male breast reduction. During your consultation, Dr. Basile will also ensure that the breast growth is stabilized.

How is Male Breast Reduction performed?

As mentioned, a male breast reduction can be performed in a few ways. If the breast consists of primarily fat, Dr. Basile can use liposuction to remove the fatty tissues. The Excision technique on the other hand removes excess skin, but this can be performed post-liposuction as well to remove sagging skin once the fat is removed. Another option is a Mastectomy, which actually removes the breast gland tissue.

Results and Recovery

During your procedure, Dr. Basile will make the incisions in the natural contours of your chest to conceal them. You will be required to wear a support garment to help your chest from swelling and to provide support during the first few weeks of the healing process. You should expect about three weeks off of vigorous exercise post-procedure and a few days away from work depending on your particular case.

Frequently Asked Questions about Male Breast Reduction

Can guys develop breasts?

Yes, males can develop breasts due to a condition known as gynecomastia. This is caused by an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue, typically caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone.

Can gynecomastia be cured without surgery?

The right treatment for gynecomastia depends on the cause. In cases where gynecomastia is caused by obesity, weight loss may be a solution. In cases where gynecomastia is caused by a medication, stopping that medication may be the solution. However, if gynecomastia is caused by excess glandular breast tissue, surgery is the most effective option.

Can gynecomastia grow back after surgery?

Gynecomastia may recur after surgery. While gynecomastia surgery is designed to remove excessive tissue and provide a more contoured chest, several factors may contribute to its recurrence. These factors include hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or weight gain. Maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle after surgery can help reduce the chances of recurrence.

How do I know if I need a breast reduction?

Males who have gynecomastia often experience lowered self-esteem, lack of confidence, and self-consciousness due to their condition. Men who are bothered by the appearance of their breasts often choose to undergo male breast reduction surgery to address these issues. If you are contemplating gynecomastia surgery, a consultation with Dr. Basile is a great first step in determining if this procedure is right for you.

How long do you have to wear a compression garment after gynecomastia?

Patients are typically advised to wear compression garments 24 hours a day for the first 2 to 4 weeks after surgery, and they should only be taken off for showering. Our team will provide you with instructions regarding your compression garment.
