In 2020, the FDA approved RHA fillers, the latest nonsurgical advancement in the treatment of deep lines or folds. The RHA collection is a new generation of hyaluronic acid fillers designed to achieve natural-looking results with a quick and easy injection process.
What is RHA?
The RHA collection of fillers is the only FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler designed to treat moderate dynamic wrinkles and folds, or wrinkles and folds that form with facial movements. RHA stands for Resilient Hyaluronic Acid, which is different from traditional hyaluronic acid fillers in that it’s made to move with your natural facial movements. It’s also made to closely resemble the natural hyaluronic acid everyone has in their skin, helping you achieve natural-looking results and ensuring your skin is moisturized, voluminous, and firm.
Am I a Good Candidate for RHA Fillers?
Nearly anyone can be treated with RHA fillers. It’s part of what makes them such a great option. Good candidates for this wrinkle reduction treatment are those who have mild to moderate wrinkles and folds in their faces that form when smiling, frowning, or making other facial expressions. These types of wrinkles are called dynamic lines and include facial wrinkles like:
- Nasolabial folds
- Glabella wrinkles (forehead wrinkles)
- Perioral wrinkles (lines around the mouth)
RHA fillers may also be recommended for purposes similar to traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, such as filling in facial volume loss or addressing static wrinkles that are always present. They can also be used to augment features like the lips or cheeks.
RHA fillers can also be paired with traditional injectable treatments like Botox to further target dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet or lines and wrinkles in the brow. Deeper wrinkles or moderate to severe signs of aging may be better suited to a surgical procedure.
The best way to know if you can benefit from RHA fillers is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Basile, our board-certified plastic surgeon. He can assess your medical history and determine if you’re an ideal candidate.
Benefits of RHA
RHA fillers offer many advantages over other dynamic wrinkle treatments, which primarily work by dampening the muscle response in targeted areas. The first advantage is that RHA fillers last much longer than neurotoxins: up to 15 months compared to about three or four. The RHA collection also lasts longer than most fillers on the market.
Another benefit is based on the fact that your skin naturally has some amount of hyaluronic acid in it, which attracts water molecules to the skin to help keep it hydrated and youthfully plump. Over time, though, skin loses hyaluronic acid, contributing to an aging appearance. Adding RHA can help your skin look and feel more like its natural youthful state.
The RHA collection also uses a gentle manufacturing process. With less processing than traditional HA fillers, it helps preserve the natural structure of the HA, helping it more closely resemble the natural HA found in your skin. This is quite different from other dermal fillers.
Finally, because the RHA collection does not affect the movement of muscles, there’s no risk of looking stiff or unnatural when the face moves. It is made specifically to move with dynamic facial movements.
Types of RHA Fillers
The RHA Collection is an award-winning line of resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA) fillers approved by the FDA for treating dynamic wrinkles and folds. Unlike other hyaluronic acid fillers, RHA is designed to closely resemble natural hyaluronic acid found in the skin, allowing it to adapt to your unique facial dynamics and movements like smiling, frowning, squinting, and talking.

Before Your RHA Procedure
Before your RHA filler treatment, Dr. Basile will meet with you to discuss your aesthetic goals, review your medical history, and evaluate your treatment area. This ensures you are an ideal candidate for RHA and that your concerns can be safely and effectively addressed.
You should inform your provider if you’ve had other fillers, recent skin treatments, or if you are prone to bruising or swelling. To prepare for your appointment, we recommend avoiding blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and intense exercise that may increase the risk of bruising or swelling at the injection site.

Your RHA Procedure
RHA injections are quick and painless procedures that take less than an hour, which makes them great for a weekend or lunch break treatment. Dr. Basile will first consult with you and give you an examination before preparing the right RHA formula for you. RHA 2 is for use around the lips and mouth, RHA 3 is for nasolabial folds, and RHA 4 is used to add volume to the face and create a more youthful contour. After injecting the filler throughout the treatment area, you are free to go home or continue on with your day.
After Your RHA Procedure
You may have very minor swelling at the injection site, but this typically fades within a day. Although you can enjoy your natural results immediately, it may take up to two weeks for your final results to become apparent. Dr. Basile will talk with you about maintenance treatment, but we typically recommend coming in about once a year to ensure you maintain your results.
What to Expect After the RHA Collection
Patients often notice improvements in their wrinkles, folds, and facial contours immediately, with full results appearing within two weeks. Depending on the treatment area, results from the RHA Collection can last up to 15 months. Maintenance treatments once a year can help you maintain a smooth, youthful appearance.
