How To Choose The Right Filler

If you’re looking at your options for dermal fillers, it can seem a little overwhelming when trying to determine which one is right for you. That’s because there are many different brands and filler families available, and each comes with its own benefits. The best way to learn more about the right filler for your goals is by meeting with a board-certified plastic surgeon, but here are some things to consider in the meantime as you plan your consultation. For anything not addressed here, a call or consultation with Dr. Basile at Basile Plastic Surgery & Med Spa can help alleviate other concerns.

What’s Your Treatment Goal?

The most important question to ask before your consultation is what your goal is, what you would like out of treatment, and what you want the filler to do. It’s likely that you already have a treatment area in mind, and this will help narrow down your selection (certain fillers are best used in certain areas, like the lips, cheeks, or facial folds). For example, if you want lip fillers, it can be helpful to know whether you want to augment the lips or fill in fine lines around the mouth. This can help you and your plastic surgeon determine which filler, likely in the Juvéderm® family, will achieve it best by looking at the specific results that each fine line filler can achieve.

How Long Do You Want Your Filler to Last?

Fillers are not permanent, so it’s important to understand how long your results will last. Some fillers will last for six to twelve months, while others can last for a few years. This is also dependent on how quickly your body metabolizes the filler because of movement and the filler’s thickness. For instance, most lip fillers last for a shorter amount of time because the mouth is one area that moves often. On the other hand, fillers for the cheeks or chin may last much longer.

Are You Treating More Than One Area?

One of the benefits of fillers is that you can easily combine them for a more well-rounded, refreshed look. Alternatively, certain fillers can be used for more than one area. If you want to address more than one area, then your physician can help you determine which fillers will work well together for your goals. Keep in mind that each filler works differently, so you may need to return for re-treatment sooner for one area than the other.

Are Fillers the Best Option for Your Goals?

It is worth noting that all fillers are injections. However, not all injections are fillers. Other injectables like BOTOX® or even other non-surgical treatments may be better suited for achieving your specific goals. For this reason, it’s helpful to keep an open mind when you consult with your plastic surgeon who can help you determine the best options for you.
